The Fine Balance of the Holidays

The holidays are a wonderful time to enjoy time with family and friends.  Many of us will be shopping, decorating our homes, preparing our loved ones’ favorite foods and desserts and either traveling to see friends and relatives or preparing to receive them in our own homes.  The season is filled with joy and also stress.  How can we possibly fit all of this in to our already bursting schedule?  How can we find the fine balance between our personal life and our work?

The first step is to identify the areas that are causing our stress levels to increase and try to eliminate or minimize the root cause of the stress.  Some of us try to do it all and set unrealistic expectations for ourselves.  We may find that we can quickly turn chores into fun when we include our friends and family and make the process of cooking, shopping or gift wrapping festive.  When staying at the home of family or friends, it may be less stressful if you plan some alone time for yourself.  It may also help to keep to your healthy routines as much as possible; it is easy to overindulge and stop exercising.

Being alone during the holiday season brings another type of stress.  If you can, invite someone who will be alone this holiday season to fill an empty chair at your table.

It is important to remember that you don’t always have to be in your office or in front of your computer to be thinking about strategies or solutions to work issues.  You may find that taking a break and spending time with family and friends gives you a refreshed perspective and allows you to find that fine balance between work and home.
